What an AI agent actually needs from a VPS

An agent that calls an LLM API is a light workload: one Node or Python process, a small database and a scheduler. It does not need a GPU. The resources go to whatever else the agent touches, such as a headless browser for scraping, a vector store for memory, or a build toolchain for coding agents.

In practice the RAM ladder looks like this:

• 1 GB: a single agent answering messages through an API, no browser.
• 2 GB: the same agent plus a lightweight database and a job queue.
• 4 GB: browser automation, embeddings, or two agents on one box.

Two requirements matter more than raw specs. The machine has to stay up when your laptop sleeps, and it has to be disposable, because agents run shell commands and install packages. Pick a host where you can snapshot and rebuild the box in minutes. The most-read agent story on Hacker News this week was titled "OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems" and reached 935 points, which is a fair argument for running an agent somewhere you can throw away rather than on your own laptop.

The term is the catch. RackNerd's KVM VPS page prices monthly billing from $17.99/month for 1 GB, so the yearly specials are where the value sits: roughly eight times less per month for the same RAM. For an always-on agent that trade usually makes sense, with the caveat that you commit a year of budget to a shared-vCPU host before you have run a single task on it.

Hostinger: the lowest monthly rate if you sign a two-year term

Hostinger's VPS hosting page lists KVM 1 at $6.49/month, a 67% discount on its $19.49 list rate, with renewal at $11.99/month on the 2-year term. That tier ships 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe and 4 TB of bandwidth. KVM 2 doubles to 2 vCPU and 8 GB for $8.99/month (renews at $14.99), KVM 4 gives 4 vCPU and 16 GB for $12.99 (renews at $28.99), and KVM 8 gives 8 vCPU and 32 GB for $25.99 (renews at $49.99).

The renewal column is where this deal gets honest: KVM 1 renews 85% higher, KVM 2 67% higher and KVM 4 roughly 123% higher. On the 24-month term you pay $155.76 up front for KVM 1, which is $77.88 a year. That beats IONOS and DigitalOcean for the same 4 GB, and it is still above RackNerd's $59.99. Hostinger's panel also bundles Kodee, an AI assistant that runs common server tasks from the browser.

IONOS: a three-month intro price, then the real rate

IONOS sells VPS M+ at $4/month for the first three months of a 1-year term, then $11/month: 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM and 120 GB NVMe. Year one totals $111. The 8 GB VPS L+ follows the same shape at $6/month for three months and $21/month after, or $207 in year one, and the 16 GB VPS XL+ runs $11 for three months and $44 after.

One useful cross-check on those numbers: IONOS labels M+ "Save 16%" and L+ "Save 18%", and the blended rates reproduce exactly that ($111 against $132 for M+). Year two is where the discount disappears, at $132 for M+ and $252 for L+ unless you renegotiate. NVMe storage is the strongest part of this offer: 120 GB on the 4 GB tier against 50 GB on Hostinger's KVM 1 and 60 GB SSD on RackNerd's 4 GB plan.

DigitalOcean: hourly billing without the commitment

DigitalOcean's droplet pricing is the cleanest of the four. Regular droplets run 512 MiB for $4/month ($0.00595/hour), 1 GiB for $6, 2 GiB at $12 with 1 vCPU or $18 with 2 vCPUs, 4 GiB for $24 ($0.03571/hour) and 8 GiB for $48. Billing is hourly with a monthly cap, so a test agent can run an afternoon and cost cents.

What you buy is the absence of a term trap, and it is expensive: $288 a year for 4 GiB against RackNerd's $59.99 for the same RAM, a factor of 4.8. Snapshots cost $0.06/GB, and automated backups add 20% of the droplet price weekly or 30% daily. For an agent that runs 24/7 and never moves, that is the wrong side of the trade. For agents you create, test and destroy, the hourly billing earns its premium.

Cost per gigabyte of RAM per year, all four compared

Normalize every plan to the same question and the spread is wider than the headline prices suggest. RackNerd's 4 GB plan at $59.99 a year works out to $15.00 per GB of RAM per year. Hostinger KVM 1 costs $19.47 per GB on the initial 24-month term (after a $155.76 payment) and $35.97 per GB at renewal. IONOS VPS M+ is $27.75 per GB in year one and $33.00 at the regular rate, and DigitalOcean's 4 GiB droplet is $72.00 per GB, 4.8x RackNerd's figure.

The decision is mostly about how long the agent lives and what it touches:
